Charlotte surprised me. I’ve been coming to this city twenty years and I forget every time how well it listens.
Ayrshire Hall holds maybe 200 people comfortably. Saturday morning it held closer to 180, and anyone who makes it to a 10 a.m. matinee on a May weekend came to pay attention. You could feel it from the wings before the band walked out.
Kat’s Sundog gave them something worth the trip. They played Snakeweed Season front to back. If you’ve only heard the record, I’ll tell you: we’ve heard her on vinyl, but Elara’s voice in a room is a different animal. An old theater like this barely contains it.
Jonah and Cal kept the floor solid while Selah did what Selah does — finds the old thing underneath a song and pulls it up into the light.
They closed with three traditional pieces Selah’s been sitting with, material out of her archival work. She didn’t say anything about a second record from the stage, but the message was clear.
We recorded “Magpies” off the board. Turn it up.
Listen: Magpies (Live at Ayrshire Hall)

[The hall is an intimate venue (but great acoustics). They put some late arrivals behind the band, since we were set up on a little thrust stage — so folks had a view of Jonah’s behind for a couple of songs until we reset.]
